For over half a century The Alexander Technique has flourished in Oxford, with teachers to be found in schools, colleges and universities, health clinics and centres for sport and the performing arts.

Born in Cornwall, land of my ancestors, (who included Sir Humphry Davy!) I have taught throughout the Southern Counties and now Oxfordshire. I am based at The Practice Rooms, South Parade, Oxford and I bring over two decades of experience to this famous city for anyone who wishes to learn a uniquely useful skill.

The Practice Rooms are a spacious and comfortable set of rooms accessed from the main street via a short driveway to the right of the men's hairstyling shop 'A Cut Above'. There is pay-and-display parking in the streets outside and the Summertown carpark nearby. Plenty of cafes and other amenities are within reach.

SOME GROUPS OF PEOPLE I WORK WITH:

Horse Riders - Alexander Technique Lessons in Oxford

Alexander Technique lessons are wonderful for both rider and horse and thus the technique is widely used in this sport. Riding a horse requires a high level of understanding of the animal's muscular efficiency - I find that this knowledge makes riders quick to improve their own muscular efficiency.

I use a saddle stand to train riders to improve all aspects of their riding, from gaining a deep seat to getting hands which are light, subtle and strong.

I've worked with many riders over the years and really enjoy it.

I recommend this article and this book on The Alexander Technique for riders.

Alexander lessons can be used by all athletes to improve their game, aim, speed and stamina. Improvements are not guaranteed but when there are habitual patterns of unidentified tension and misuse, removing these will effect performance.

I've taught climbers to improve their grade, golfers to decrease their handicap and many other athletes to be more energised and comfortable. I myself have used the technique in swimming, running and dancing.

'Learn to optimise your underlying use and remove barriers to success!'

'I can definitely say without hesitation that I wouldn't have had the rowing success that I have had the luxury of experiencing in my short time on the water, without finding the AT and the great teachers that I have had the privilege to work with.'

Students - Alexander Technique Lessons in Oxford

What a sorry sight!

Studying and sitting exams can be an exhausting business. When you add to this trying to keep fit, socialising, finding accommodation and the money to support the whole scene, it's little wonder that students can experience high levels of stress.

I found the Alexander Technique very useful when I was studying at The University of Exeter. Lessons can help increase energy levels, mood and well-being.

Actors - Alexander Technique Lessons in Oxford

The world's best educational institutions for the performing arts have Alexander Technique on the curriculum, hence the great number of famous film stars who swear by the technique. You can read more about how the Alexander Technique is useful for actors, here.

With Alexander training it becomes possible to play a role as challenging as, say, Richard III, a physically and emotionally twisted character, day after day, without personal harm or exhaustion.

I find working with actors tremendous fun.

'Good acting is revealing yourself, not covering yourself up. If your body is free, your mind is free.  [The Alexander Technique allows] you to feel what it's like to stay open physically, and also stay fully involved in whatever you're supposed to be doing.'

Annette Bening

"[The Alexander Technique] is a way to transform stress to joy.  It's my

way of keeping on track with work and truth and the world I’m in which is working with people and creating. It’s for anyone who wants to be in contact with their own body and the way we tense ourselves and relax ourselves. It’s another way of moving."

Musicians - Alexander Technique Lessons in Oxford

For over a century the Alexander Technique has been used by musicians worldwide to improve their range, stamina, technique, comfort and well-being.

I've taught music scholars at several independent schools and over the years have encountered many different instrumentalists with an array of postural challenges.

I found the technique very beneficial myself in training and performing as a singer, in fact, all aspects of performance.

'Forty years ago, after one of my concerts, Adrian Boult told me that if I continued to conduct like that I'd become a cripple, and that I must take lessons in the Alexander Technique. Today I am still having lessons - as with music, there is no end to the learning process.  It affects not only the use of the body, but also one's views of oneself and one's behavior. For the aches and ills that come with the years, the Technique can work miracles.'

Managing Director, Royal Academy of Music

I will always refer my pupils to a doctor or an osteopath when appropriate, as I am not medically trained. However, when a person has unidentified muscular contraction in a problem area, it’s worth aiming to reduce that contraction because it may be contributing towards, or even causing the problem itself.

I've worked with people suffering from a huge range of musculoskeletal issues, from migraines to RSI to sciatica.

Alexander Technique lessons have been reported to cure all sorts of conditions and clinical evidence has come from the following clinical trials:

'We already notice, with growing amazement, very striking improvements in such diverse things as high blood pressure, breathing, depth of sleep, overall cheerfulness and mental alertness, resilience against outside pressures, and in such a refined skill as playing a musical instrument.'

Businesses - Alexander Technique Lessons in Oxford

The fact is, companies lose a lot of money and time due to employees suffering from musculoskeletal problems. These issues can range from simple discomfort and fatigue to RSI and neck pain.

Lessons in the Alexander Technique can help reduce absenteeism and improve work-related performance; workshops and presentations can provide opportunities for health and safety requirements, team-building, or entertainment.

I offer free lunch-and-learn talks to companies in Oxford, I hold workshops for groups and I go to business premises to give one-to-one lessons or rolling group classes.

Here is a list of companies who have used the Alexander Technique.

Lessons in the Alexander Technique are useful for each stage of becoming a parent: the weight and pressures of pregnancy, the challenges of childbirth and all the lifting that comes with a small child. I have experience of working with pregnant mothers, and parents of young children and am also a mother myself.

I recommend this book for more information on this subject.

Children - Alexander Technique Lessons in Oxford

Over the years I have taught many children at Sherborne School, Sherborne School for Girls and Exeter School. I worked with music scholars, helped children with their self-esteem, body image,

exam nerves, posture and well-being. Lessons can help with medical problems such as sports injuries, dyspraxia, scoliosis, slipped disk and scoliosis.

You are very welcome to accompany your child during lessons, make yourself comfortable and use the Wifi.

I am fully DBS checked

To conclude:

I give workshops, group lessons and presentations at Oxford business premises, venues hired by interest groups and at The Practice Rooms. I give individual private lessons at The Practice Rooms.

You can find quite a lot of additional information about the technique on my website or on the STAT website (Society for teachers of the Alexander Technique). I also recommend this book by one of my own teachers, Carolyn Nicholls, or 'Body Learning' by Michael Gelb, for a complete introductory guide to the Alexander Technique.

I have years of experience teaching the Alexander Technique and it is a fascinating, vocational career. Each of us is truly unique and I love the challenge of helping people unravel their patterns of misuse.
